👋🤟👍 Awareness and Basic Sign Language

On Sunday, 7th September, the Rotaract Club of Montebello organised a powerful awareness session aimed at breaking the stigma surrounding people with disabilities and inspiring an inclusive mindset among the youth of our Rotaract and Interact Clubs.

We had the privilege of welcoming our guest speakers, Mr. Julian Tarbox and Mr. Wazim Nunsloll, who shared valuable insights on the ethics of interacting with the deaf community and the social exclusion they often face.

An interactive activity then encouraged volunteers to communicate without words — a reminder of how much body language and facial expressions can express beyond spoken words ☺.

Our speakers also shed light on the experiences of Mauritians with hearing disabilities, especially in the workplace, and discussed ways to create environments that are more inclusive and welcoming.

The session concluded with a practical sign language class 🤏👆✊, where members learned the alphabet and common everyday words. This initiative was a meaningful step toward fostering inclusivity and understanding — reminding us that everyone deserves to be seen, valued, and included. ✨
